Post subject:  Tracking Battle Results

I played around a while ago making a battle results tracker, a bit like the Epic UK one. I figured I'd get it up in case anyone thought it was worthwhile having.

NOTE: this post has been updated as the tracker has evolved.

It is not feature-complete, but it is a fairly complex application that aims to track a fair amount of detail. It will show:
- Race vs race army list statistics down to the list version (e.g. how well do Space Marines do against Chaos lists, or how well does the NetEA Biel-Tan list do)
- Player win/loss/draw rankings
- Player win/loss/draw rankings for a given race
- Each player's win/loss/draw rankings with the races they have played
- A table of game records (e.g. for a tournament, race vs race, individual players etc)
- Individual game summaries

You enter data using a form, the easiest way is to paste in lists from ArmyForge, this will automatically populate some of the other fields. In general it tries to fill in as much information as it can infer. For example if you check the relevant victory conditions it will automatically check the "win" box if applicable.

Some of the limitations incude:
1. It doesn't track points, only win/loss/draw and individual victory conditions
2. It expects you to fill in most fields, e.g. the list you used (this is so a basic search can be supported)
3. You must enter your email address (this is so people can delete games)

Anyway, here is a test version you can play around in and fill with crap:

Start adding games if you want to see how the stats work... and post back here or PM me with the inevitable bugs!

If you want to use it "properly", here's a clean version:

That is interesting. I wonder how you've stored the information for lists? It is a text field or are the formations separated? Could you for example do formation usage comparisons? For example how many percent of winning list used formation X.

The original idea, before I just started doing random things with it, was that you could eventually search for a formation/unit and get stats that way, but of course it isn't implemented. The plain text list is just stored as a whole, but it can be fairly easily parsed for display. This is just the quickest way (I haven't spent a huge amount of time on it, since I was just messing around and have no idea if it is useful).

It might work OK stored as it is for a search, but something else like a drop down list of formations would need the formations to be stored independently (not hard). But actually another question is whether unit/formation names are normalised between lists in Adam's utility. I've not done much investigation but if, for example, some lists use Jet Bike and others use Jetbike, it will make a difference.

I've added a basic text search limiter on the race stats page to illustrate what I mean.

Good idea.

OT but sort of related - does anyone know where the battle reporting thread is? I've had a look and tried a search, but I can't find it. I played my first EA since early this year yesterday and was going to add it.

I know this is old but since it was mentioned in another thread, I thought I would update this to match the current status.

Interesting, somebody probably added an army it doesn't like/know about, I'll take a look.

Thanks!

Hehe perhaps (it won't work), but something is wrong as it shouldn't actually care any more if it doesn't recognise the army.

Previously I had it validating the input and tied to army forge lists but I changed my mind as that's too restrictive, I decided to remove most of the barriers and instead just make it try as hard as it can to normalise the bits it can (eg so biel tan is the same as biel-tan). Apparently in spending hours wrestling with character encoding issues to get special characters like in ulthwe working I missed something.

It's sort of working now that I'm at home if it's any help Kyrt. I still get an error message though see attached picture.
